AIEA Virtual Global Summit Focuses on Education Internationalisation
The Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) celebrated its 40th anniversary this month with a conference focusing on the future of international higher education.
Dozens of higher education leaders and academics came together for the association’s Partner Day on April 5, followed by its second two-day global virtual conference.
Established in 1982, the AIEA is the only association dedicated exclusively to senior leaders in international education. Traditionally, its annual conferences provided members with an opportunity to network and discuss issues of mutual interest. Last year’s conference was for the first time held on line because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The first day’s sessions, attended by Al-Fanar Media, explored the future of international higher education. Other themes included the impact of Covid-19 on middle-sized universities, internationalisation prospects in and for a New World, ways to decolonize internationalisation, the best practices in strategic university partnerships, and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The session also highlighted the organisation’s second revised edition of “The Handbook of International Higher Education” (2021). A session hosted the editors Darla K. Deardorff, Hans de Wit, and other contributors.

Over the past two days, the AIEA’s Virtual Global Summit featured keynote speeches by Amer F. Ahmed, the University of Vermont’s Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and by Fernando Reimers, the Ford Foundation Professor of the Practice of International Education and Director of the Global Education Innovation Initiative.
